Three stories from the siege of Vraks, told from inside a single company of the Death Korps of Krieg. Commissar Halbrecht, field medic Brenn and their men take one bastion after another — and learn that on this world, counting the dead weighs more than taking ground.
The beginning: Bastion Canticum. Meet the company and its arithmetic of guns, breaches and losses — and the colonel's line that hangs over all three stories.
The morning after, the next bastion is already waiting. Misericordia is quieter than Canticum, and that is what makes it dangerous — here the fighting becomes a fight over the names of the dead.
The finale picks up where Brenn left off: with the registers from Misericordia. Beneath the captured bastion lies an archive — and the costliest victory of the three.
