Definition
Numbered brass disc of the mining world Vandau, one to a miner, without a name. It hangs on the board of the pithead house while the man is above ground; whoever goes down takes it off. In the evening they count: what hangs on the hook is searched for. A tally on the board means the man is out — even when someone else brought it back.
