Description
Hochtarn is a cold mining world with thin air, whose continents consist of folded mountain ranges. Summer lasts seven weeks, and the rest of the year snow lies over the winding towers. The population lives in shaft communities clinging to the valley slopes.

Fauna & Flora
Stunted pines and larches for pit timber up to the tree line, lichens and cushion plants above it. On the high pastures roam chamois herds that are running wild since the herders are gone.
Population & Society
Shaft communities on the valley slopes: the pits below, the mountain forests above them, and highest up the pastures of the chamois herders. Every community has its shaft choir, which sends off the buried with the death song; since the tithe of 972.M41 the cage-men are missing, and in Tarnfeld eleven voices sing where forty once did.
