Fauna & Flora
Moor to the horizon: grass that lies in the wind and never stands up, water in black channels between the sods, peat and salt in the air. Gulls and moor snipe under a sky so low that the landing boats vanish in it.
Population & Society
Farmers on the moor whose planetary defence consists of a few thousand men with lasguns who have never fired a shot. In the assembly area beneath the old fort forty thousand Cadians stood in tents; three hundred Ederhaveners volunteered for the 331st after the first night, and in the end 1,350 of the regiment were Ederhaveners, the Recruited.
