Homeworld(s)
Early era: Gramarye as original recruitment world; later Caliban, a monster‑haunted forest Death World with a knightly feudal society. After Caliban’s destruction the Chapter relocates to The Rock, a Warp‑drifting fortress‑moon (effectively a fleet‑based fortress‑monastery) and draws recruits from various scattered worlds.
Combat Doctrine(s)
- Balanced yet tightly doctrinal combined‑arms force with specialised wings: Deathwing Terminators for teleport and breakthrough assaults, Ravenwing bikes and speeders for reconnaissance and strike attacks, Ironwing/Dreadwing for armour and mass‑destruction operations. Strong emphasis on planning, stubborn defence and the precise hunt for high‑value targets (the Fallen).
Epochs & Role
In the Great Crusade they often serve as the Emperor’s spearhead and testbed for new doctrines. During the Heresy they are tied up in the Thramas Crusade against the Night Lords, fail to reach Terra in time and upon returning become embroiled in the civil war on Caliban, ending with the world’s destruction and the scattering of the Fallen. In the Scouring they publicly hunt traitors while secretly beginning the cross‑Chapter hunt for the Fallen. In M41/M42 the Dark Angels and their Unforgiven successors fight on many fronts, including around the Eye of Terror, and witness Lion El’Jonson’s return in the Indomitus Era.
