Description
The hive world Rethax is a world of vertical landscapes — twelve hives, each four and a half kilometres high, staggered across the equatorial zone like the teeth of a comb. The ground is concrete panelling and steel grating; the sky is grey to the horizon.

Fauna & Flora
Acid rain, no snow; lichens on the façades, fungi and mould in the shafts, and in the cooling-water canals eels that travel through the hives with the factory return flows.
Population & Society
Several hundred million in twelve hives four and a half kilometres high; a man is tattooed with his caste sign, cog, piston, anvil or conduit. The shaft-dalers, women who worked in the lowest shafts and were trained for rooms that poison others, are lost as an occupational tradition.
