Description

Lachrimae is a drowned world of salt fens under a bruise-coloured sky. Its population descends from Imperial flagellants who were cut off when the Eye swelled over them. They still whip themselves at dusk, and they now pray to the Host. Sorrow-eels grow as thick as a man's thigh.
Home world of: The Verdigris Host (chapter).

Fauna & Flora

Salt marshes beneath a bruise-coloured sky: samphire, reeds that taste of iron, and eels in the creeks. Herons with verdigris-coloured plumage stand between the piles and wait, as the faithful learned from them.

Population & Society

Some tens of thousands of descendants of Imperial flagellants who were cut off when the Eye swelled above them. They live in pile huts on the marshes and still scourge themselves at dusk; their prayer now goes to the Host, and the old ones count the strokes in a language that survives only for counting.
