Description

Grünwald is a quarantine world — not because of a hostile alien presence, but because of a disease that decimated the population a thousand years ago and still slumbers in the soil. The Imperium sealed the world off: no trade without decontamination, no visit without permission from the Adeptus Biologicus.

Fauna & Flora

Dense, ancient forests, lakes and flat river valleys. Above the soil in which the sickness slumbers grow fungi that are poisonous to anyone not born here; in the lakes stand carp that nobody catches who fears the Adeptus Biologicus.

Population & Society

Small, scattered villages, each self-sufficient with its own council and its own nobility; some millions of people whom nobody from outside visits. Whoever leaves goes through decontamination; whoever stays has the sickness in the soil as a neighbour. The Lindau silk snail, which spins only at stable temperatures, was bred for five centuries; the levies took the breeders.
