Mining World

Segmentum Obscurus

Description

A mining world of ash and iron, with ore veins that should be impossible by any standard measure; its people call it the Grey World because the word ash sounds too much like death. Volcanic ridges run like ribs across the northern continent. The slag-crawler, a blind worm, eats ore dust and excretes iron pellets; its trails show the ash-workers new veins. The grey-wing, a carrion bird, nests in dead chimneys; whoever wants to become an aspirant fetches a feather from its nest. Home world of the Order of the Iron Veins. The Chapter seat lies below the surface: a world you enter by going into it.
Described in the dossier of the Order of the Iron Veins; first mentioned in: “What the Iron Keeps” (story no. 27).

Fauna & Flora

Slag-crawlers, blind worms that eat ore dust and excrete iron pellets, and greywings, carrion birds in dead vents. Otherwise only ash lichen grows on the ridges.

Population & Society

A few million ash-workers in pit cities along the ridges; they call the world the Grey World, because “ash” sounds too much like death. Whoever is born in the pit bears the name of their shaft; the seat of the Iron Veins beneath the surface is the only place where advancement leads downwards.
